{"id":1807,"date":"2015-03-04T10:15:23","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T10:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/my-brains.co.uk\/jackross\/?p=1807"},"modified":"2015-03-02T10:19:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-02T10:19:41","slug":"businesses-lack-mental-health-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/my-brains.co.uk\/jackross\/businesses-lack-mental-health-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses lack mental health policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #980100;\"><strong>Three quarters of employers don&#8217;t have a workplace mental health policy, research by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and YouGov has found.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The survey of 1,150 employees and 586 employers reveals that stress and anxiety affect the productivity of 32% of employees.<\/p>\n<p>The research found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>77% of employers haven&#8217;t introduced a mental health policy in the workplace<\/li>\n<li>7% have had discussions with employees about mental health issues in the last year.<\/li>\n<li>93% of businesses say that stress can affect staff performance<\/li>\n<li>82% of companies think they should introduce a mental health policy to promote emotional wellbeing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Simon Walker, director general of the IoD, said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Huge progress has been made, but society still has a long way to go in increasing awareness and understanding of mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Businesses have an enormous role to play in creating an environment where such issues can be discussed openly, effectively and safely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Combating workplace stress<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), employers risk subjecting their employees to undue stress if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>demand unreasonable amounts of work<\/li>\n<li>do not allow staff a say on how and when they work<\/li>\n<li>fail to provide support<\/li>\n<li>do not foster good working relationships among colleagues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to minimise workplace stress Acas advises that employers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consider the needs of their workforce<\/li>\n<li>involve employees in decision making processes and listen to their concerns<\/li>\n<li>set clear and defined goals for each individual<\/li>\n<li>have clear procedures for misconduct, bullying and grievances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Talk to the Jack Ross team today\u00a0about employee health and wellbeing on 0161 832 4451 or email <a href=\"mailto:info@jackross.co.uk\">info@jackross.co.uk<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three quarters of employers don&#8217;t have a workplace mental health policy, research by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and YouGov has found.
