But with so much time before the deadline, you decide not to worry about it for now.<\/p>\n<p>Then the weeks start to fly by, Christmas comes and goes, and soon you\u2019re planning for the New Year and getting back to work as normal.<\/p>\n<p>Before you know it, it\u2019s the end of January, you\u2019re searching for your registration details, and HMRC\u2019s waiting times are growing longer as thousands of other taxpayers in the same predicament try to get in touch.<\/p>\n<p>More than a quarter of tax returns in January 2018 \u2013 that\u2019s 1,290,948 altogether \u2013 were submitted less than 48 hours before the self-assessment filing deadline at midnight on 31 January.<\/p>\n<p>Around 30,348 of those were left literally to the last minute, between 11pm and 11:59pm.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s better to finish your return early on to avoid this last-minute rush \u2013 but if the thought of rummaging through old receipts and puzzling over tax calculations fills you with dread, we can help.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">What is self-assessment \u2013 and are you included?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most employees\u2019 tax is deducted automatically through PAYE.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re self-employed, it\u2019s up to you to let HMRC know your income for the year and pay the tax you owe. This is done through a self-assessment tax return.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not the only reason you might need to complete self-assessment, though. You\u2019ll need to send a return if, in 2017\/18, you had:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>income from self-employment that\u2019s more than \u00a31,000<\/li>\n<li>more than \u00a32,500 from renting out property<\/li>\n<li>more than \u00a32,500 in other untaxed income, such as tips or commission<\/li>\n<li>income from savings or investments of \u00a310,000 or more<\/li>\n<li>income from dividends from shares of \u00a310,000 or more<\/li>\n<li>profits liable to capital gains tax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll also need to complete a return if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>were a company director<\/li>\n<li>claimed child benefit, and you or your partner\u2019s income was over \u00a350,000.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can find a full list of circumstances in which you\u2019ll need to file a return on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/self-assessment-tax-returns\/who-must-send-a-tax-return\">Government\u2019s website<\/a>, or you can call us to ask about your situation.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">What do you need to do?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The process for self-assessment is fairly lengthy, so make sure you\u2019re aware of the different stages and have enough time to complete them.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Registering<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If it\u2019s your first time completing a self-assessment tax return, or you didn\u2019t file one in the previous year, the first thing you\u2019ll need to do is register.<\/p>\n<p>The registration deadline for returns relating to the 2017\/18 tax year was <strong>5 October 2018<\/strong>. If you missed this deadline, or miss any of the others in the process, speak to HMRC as soon as possible. You may still be fined but this shows good faith and can make the process less painful.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve registered, you\u2019ll receive a unique taxpayer reference number which you can use to sign up for HMRC\u2019s online services.<\/p>\n<p>After you\u2019ve done this, HMRC will send you a PIN number in the post, which you can use to access the online services and file your return.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Completing your return<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The deadline for paper returns for 2017\/18 was <strong>31 October 2018<\/strong>, and online returns must be filed by <strong>31 January 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before you begin, make sure you have all your records and paperwork together.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re registered as self-employed, you\u2019ll need the following records:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>all your business expenses<\/li>\n<li>records of any sales or income<\/li>\n<li>PAYE records (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>VAT records (if registered)<\/li>\n<li>records of your personal income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re employed or a company director for a limited company, you may also need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>P45, P60 and P11D forms<\/li>\n<li>certificates from a taxed award scheme<\/li>\n<li>information about any redundancy or termination payments<\/li>\n<li>information about income and benefits from your job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Paying your bill<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019ve finished filling in your return \u2013 but before you submit it \u2013 you can view your calculation to see how much tax you owe.<\/p>\n<p>This will include any tax you owe for the 2017\/18 tax year, as well as your first payment on account towards the 2018\/19 tax year.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for paying it is the same as that for filing the return, by <strong>midnight on 31 January 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">What are the penalties if it\u2019s late?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s an initial \u00a3100 penalty if your return is <strong>up to three months<\/strong> late, but this could increase the longer you leave it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After three months,<\/strong> there are additional daily penalties of \u00a310 per day, up to a maximum of \u00a3900.<\/p>\n<p>Then,<strong> after six months<\/strong>, you could end up with a further penalty of 5% of the tax due or \u00a3300 \u2013 whichever is greater.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After 12 months<\/strong>, there\u2019s another 5% or \u00a3300 charge, which will again depend on whichever is greater.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you pay your tax bill late<\/strong>, you could face additional penalties of 5% of the tax unpaid at 30 days, six months and 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>You can appeal against a penalty if you have a reasonable excuse, but the conditions for this are limited. Circumstances for appeal could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>if a partner or close relative has passed away prior to the deadline<\/li>\n<li>serious illness<\/li>\n<li>an emergency hospital stay<\/li>\n<li>unexpected delays in the post<\/li>\n<li>an IT failure (hardware or software) when preparing your tax return<\/li>\n<li>external causes (fire, flood or theft) which prevented you from completing a return<\/li>\n<li>issues with HMRC services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Common problems<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re filing your self-assessment return, it\u2019s best to get it right the first time so you don\u2019t have to worry once the deadline has passed.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the most common mistakes, and how you can avoid them.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Missing out on tax relief<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While self-assessment seems focused on calculating the tax you owe, you might forget about what you can claim back.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to claim back tax relief where you\u2019re eligible for it, including on charitable donations you\u2019ve made, pension contributions, or work expenses.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Not declaring all your income<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All your taxable income needs to be declared on your self-assessment form.<\/p>\n<p>That includes earnings, dividends, pension payments, interest on your bank account, capital gains and rent from a buy-to-let property.<\/p>\n<p>It can be especially easy to miss something out if your financial situation is complex, so give some extra thought to this section to make sure you\u2019ve included all your income.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #980100;\">Late or inaccurate filing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>HMRC statistics show that around 745,588 returns were filed late for the 2016\/17 tax year.
